More often than not, the words mold and mildew appear together and many people think that they are the same thing.
Both of them are types of fungi and have similar traits and they can sometimes be difficult to tell them apart by just looking at them. People tend to group them in the same sentence because they often appear in wet, mosit and warm spots. Their growth patterns are also alike but you will usually find mildew in showers and clothing. Mold likes to grow on food but can be found in homes as well as long as the environment is ripe for growth such as the bathroom and basement.
Mold can have a fuzzy appearnace and since it grows in colonies the shape of it varies depending on the infestation. It Mildew can be powerdery or downey depending on the type. One of the big differneces is that the way they grow. Mold grows in a fomation known as hyphae. The hyphae grows in a flat pattern for mildew. Mold forms a colony which conist of many hyphae.
So while there is technical differences if you find mold or mildew in your home you will want to identify it and remove it. Some types of mold can make you very ill. both mold and mildew can making breathing prblems such as asthma worse. Both mold and mildew are unsightly and can cause an odor in your home.
